Tips For Becoming a Wine Distributor

Do you or someone you know want to become a wine distributor? Wine consumption will be appealing forever. Wine distribution is a very good field to go into and it is lucrative. How do you become one a wine distributor? Let's look at a few steps you need to take. Fact is, it's very simple.

First, you must know something about wine and the market. To do this:

  • Take a Course at Your Local Community College
  • Check out the local stores in your area.
  • Take a poll of the most popular brands and their flavors from local vendors or retailers.
  • Other specialty wine distributors can provide you with valuable information


Second, you will need to get an idea of how to market your products

  • Obtain demographics.
  • Check for the best wines to sell and in which areas
  • Determine purchase habits


Third and very important is to determine is the legal aspect of wine distribution

  • What paperwork or background checks are necessary?
  • Are there any issues you might have in your background that would prevent you from becoming a distributor?
  • To obtain the answers to these questions and others, check with your areas Department of Alcohol and Drug Regulations. Almost every state has one. Before you can even consider selling alcoholic beverages, you will need to go through this agency. Contact the agency and they will guide you from there.


Fourth check with local wineries for products and purchase requirements.

If you have determined the market you are interested in, you must determine availability, prices, regulations, and the policies of each.

Now, for the most important aspect of your venue. Know your product. As mentioned earlier, if you have not already done so, take a class at the local college. Even if you are well versed in wine, there is always additional information to be learned. For instance, some physicians are saying for heart health and stress issues, wine is advised. If a pregnant mother has and extremely active fetus, sipping about an ounce of red wine nightly just before going to bed helps the baby.

As a wine supplier you will need to have full control over the bottle, you will have to know your importers if you are going to import, or you might buy directly from a domestic vineyard or wholesalers. You will also need to have a fine warehouse for your wine as well as tasting a lot of grapes and take notes on what could be the next success.
