How to Make Wine

Once you’ve made the decision that you’re going to make your own wine, the process in of itself is fairly easy. Here you will get a brief overview on what the wine maker is going through. What you need is the ingredients and a recipe to follow. Now winery can make wine without a recipe.

Before you begin, make sure to have the right equipment that will lead to a successful wine making experience: a food-grade vessel for fermentation, an air-lock for later sealing up the vessel hoses for siphoning the juice, a hydrometer for checking the sugar level of the wine, and an item to stir everything with. Also, make sure you have a recipe in mind that you wish to use and which fruits you’d like to add.

Fermentation is the process that everything else you do revolves around when making your wine. Fermentation allows you to turn the fruits that you have selected into the wine itself. Alcohol and CO2 gas will be the end result after the bubbling and foaming phase where the fermentation yeast eats away the sugars.

One job of the home wine maker is to make sure that all the conditions are ripe so that you can have a healthy fermentation process. Temperatures should range between 70 and 75. Fermentation lasts between two to four weeks and in this stage the only work required is to siphon the wine occasionally.

Racking is done during the fermentation process. The first racking needs to be done somewhere between the fifth to seventh day. At this point the wine has gone through the fermentation process in the open air and will have to be locked tight. Any pulp will be removed during this time. Racking is done a second time after the fermentation period has ended and the third racking will be done when it is time to bottle your wine.

Home made wine isn’t difficult and before you know it, you’ll be a connoisseur of making wine from scratch.
