What is Champagne?

On special occasions we usually drink champagne, because it's glamorous and it makes us feel special. Have you ever thought of what champagne really is, and what's the difference between sparkling wine and champagne?

When you speak technically, champagne is a sparkling wine that is made in the Champagne region of France. The wine is also made according to the traditional champagne method and principles. In California the term champagne is often used to describe all sparkling wines in general and does not relate to any specific wine region of origin. Many producers in California actually don't call their sparkling wine champagne even when it is made using the traditional method. This is out of respect for the Champagne region in France as well as to avoid unnecessary confusion.

All over the world Champagne is often used as a general description for sparkling wines, but this is incorrect. As most people know Champagne is a wine producing region in northern France that was named in the Middle Ages from the Latin word "campagna". The word "campagna" means something like countryside and it's only a sparkling wine from the Champagne region in France that actually is allowed to be called Champagne.

Where is champagne made?

What you call Champagne is only made in the Champagne region of northern France. More accurate this region is just northeast of Paris. In France wines that are made in this region are allowed to be called Champagne. This is even while the process to create Champagne can be undertaken anywhere in the world as long as the climate allows it.

How is Champagne Made?

When pressing grapes, only two pressings are permitted. The more prestigious Champagnes are often made only exclusively from the first grape pressing. The second grape pressing, usually called the taille, is often blended with the cuvée to make more vintage and non-vintage Champagnes.

Then you have the fermentation that all Champagnes undergo. During the first fermentation when the grape juice becomes wine the time aspect is about two to three weeks.

Champagne is a very special sparkling wine and it fascinates a lot of people. Many also try to learn as much as they can about champagne.
